The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival is a yearly event in Taiwan that involves releasing thousands of paper lanterns into the sky. The festival is held in the small town of Pingxi, which is near Taipei, Taiwan’s Capital.
With its location, this is a must see event for tourists from all over the world!!
This is great activity for families, for they can get their own sky lantern and write a message on it. You can write anything you want, from wishes of good luck and health, to thanks for a fruitful year.
The festival last for a week, but highlights of the festival this 2025 will be at February 12.
Initially, lanterns were used to signal the end of the busy coal mining season in the area, as well as to ward off evil spirits. Over time, it evolved into a more spiritual event, with people writing their wishes, prayers, and hopes for the year on the lanterns, and then releasing them into the sky as a way of sending those wishes into the heavens.
The sight of the lanterns floating upwards against the dark night is a truly breathtaking experience.
If you’re planning to visit, be sure to get there early, as the area can get quite crowded with both locals and tourists.
There are also other activities during the festival, such as traditional performances, local food, and cultural displays, making it a lively and festive experience.
How to Get There:
From Taipei, you can take a train from Taipei Main Station to Pingxi Station (about 1-1.5 hours). Trains become very busy during the festival, so it’s a good idea to plan your travel in advance.
